An Outdated Kitchen Gets a Makeover – and New Life – With the Help of Northstar Appliances

Today’s kitchens have evolved beyond showcasing a single design style. Instead they focus on an artful mix of style, comfort, ease and technology to provide a personal, one-of-a-kind experience.

For this design feature, we are showcasing a great example of retro, midcentury appliances being used in a more contemporary kitchen setting to create a visually stunning look with plenty of high performance functionality.

Something Old, Something New

When homeowner Whitney Anderson and her husband bought their home in Alberta, Canada, it was filled with original design elements from the 1990s, and was very much in need of a renovation. They agreed that the first project they would tackle was redesigning the kitchen to make better use of the space.

The goal of the remodel was threefold: 1) enlarge the kitchen by removing an existing wall, 2) make the kitchen more functional, and 3) create a relaxed, coastal feeling – all with the aim of creating the couple’s dream kitchen. Once the layout was finalized and the electrical was installed, transformation of the kitchen began.

The first order of business was to select the appliances. The homeowners wanted to add fun, interesting elements to their kitchen and ended up choosing the Elmira Stove Works Northstar collection in Robin’s Egg Blue.

According to Anderson, who is a member of the team at Wolf Creek Cabinets in Alberta, “We wanted the appliances to have the largest visual impact in the kitchen, so we designed everything else around them. The idea was to make the other elements beautiful, but not too busy, as we didn’t want them to compete with the appliances.”

A Balanced Design

Next on the agenda was adding new wood cabinetry in a darker shade to bring the kitchen out of the past and give it a more contemporary look. Cabinets in colors such as dark brown, slate or black can  make a dramatic statement. These hues can also create a more functional kitchen, as darker cabinetry requires less maintenance and won’t show wear and tear as easily as white or lighter wood cabinets.

In this case, the darker cabinets provided a counterpoint to the vibrant pop of color from the appliances, resulting in an eye-catching design that wasn’t overwhelming.

Adds Anderson, “We’re really glad we chose the Northstar appliances because they are truly beautiful and we plan on keeping them for a long time. We felt they were a better investment than standard, stainless steel appliances, which are functional but not nearly as interesting.”

Other elements included the addition of quartz countertops, a herringbone backsplash and wood flooring in cooler tones that complement the cabinetry, along with new, more contemporary light fixtures.

Anderson says the new kitchen has changed the way her family lives. “We went from spending time in separate rooms to being together in the kitchen, which has become our new gathering space. I am happy we took on the challenge. The space is beautiful, unique and will suit our needs for many years to come.”

Famous TV Kitchens Reloaded: Hi-Tech Upgrades to Retro Designs for a Blast from the Not-So-Distant Past

If you love television, chances are that you grew up right alongside some pretty famous families. The Bradys. The Waltons. The Seinfeld gang. And at the very center of all the laughs, the confusion, the sadness, and the touching moments you’ll likely never to forget, are the memorable kitchens in the homes of the families we loved.

Many people still consider the kitchen to be the very heart of the home — for a variety of unique reasons. So let’s take a walk back down memory lane — revisiting the famous TV sitcom kitchens of the past — and highlight what it was about these environments that made them so special.  Plus, consider how their designs have influenced the kitchens of today.

The Brady Bunch: Alice ran a tight ship, feeding and raising a special group of kids

The Brady Bunch was the dominant family-focused sitcom of the 1970s. And in the Brady family kitchen, housekeeper and matriarch Alice Nelson was the master of her domain. The kitchen environment itself was a nod to everything that was great about the 70s. With an open floor plan in the middle class suburban home, the walls were adorned with perfectly fake wood paneling broken up by that memorable kitchen island.

Add to the atmosphere the stainless double oven, and Alice had everything she needed to keep the family eating heartily and running smoothly. The only thing missing? A retro microwave oven from Northstar. Imagine what Alice could have done with 1200 watts of power and capacity of 1.6 cubic feet. We’re talking sensor reheat, genius sensor cook setting, inverter turbo defrost, and a popcorn key.

The Waltons: An All-American tale of just how hard — and sweet — life could be

There’s little denying that the Waltons owned 1960s drama. This All-American family from Walton’s Mountain in Jefferson County, Virginia gave us a glimpse into growing up during one of the nation’s toughest times. And as you might expect, hearts soared and challenges were bested in one of the more memorable kitchen settings in American television history.

The Walton kitchen garnered specific acclaim for its period-appropriate detail — from the matching woodgrain furniture to the woodburning cookstove that anchored this special room. However, swap that out with the Fireview woodburning cookstove and you have a model that still perfectly matches the time period, but adds the convenience of high-efficiency and optional side burners.

Seinfeld: The show about nothing from the smallest kitchen in history

Kitchen space in a New York City apartment is at a premium. And no TV show demonstrated this phenomenon more clearly than the sitcom that dominated the 90s — Seinfeld. The motley crew of Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer spent years getting in and out of trouble — shoulder to shoulder in the confines of Jerry’s cramped apartment kitchen. Literally two steps would take you from the fridge to the stove and back. And you could access the microwave halfway through that trip.

One addition to the Seinfeld kitchen that they would have loved might be the Northstar fridge. With six models and eight dynamic colors to choose from, this retro appliance would have done wonders for Jerry’s cool factor — particularly on the few occasions when he entertained a female visitor. And with the addition of a BrewMaster factory-installed draft kit, the boys could have enjoyed cold brews to fuel their insane conversations.

Elmira Stove Works carries several complete lines of antique kitchen appliances to help you capture the look of your favorite TV kitchen. Plus, our brands are equipped with the very latest in cooking technology — which means you’ll never sacrifice the performance you demand for the aesthetics you prefer.

Elmira Stove Works Goes Gray During National Kitchen & Bath Month

Design history has shown gray to be synonymous with cold, sterile, boring environments. Within recent years, the color gray’s reputation has made a complete turnaround in the realm of home design. Neutral gray can be seen in every room of the home, indoors and out, having been transformed from blasé to stunning and versatile, when accessorized appropriately.

In the spirit of October being National Kitchen & Bath month, Elmira Stove Works has on-trend gray products available for upcoming remodel and new construction projects.

Quicksilver and white

The Quicksilver finish pays the role of a subtle neutral in this airy kitchen.

Whether gray is the primary color or secondary accent, it can make a major impact. Our Northstar collection has various kitchen appliances available in nine standard colors, including the “stain-least” Quicksilver finish, as well as over 200 distinctive custom colors that can serve as complementary shades to a gray space. No matter the product, Elmira delivers on style, function and trend.

Presenting Our New Stainless Steel Retro Refrigerator and “Painless” Quicksilver Finish

Stainless steel has been an everlasting trend for kitchens for decades. Homeowners enjoy the clean, modern look of stainless steel, along with its design flexibility. Well, we have put a slight twist on this traditional trend – introducing the Model 1950FTSS refrigerator!

The Model 1950FTSS features top-of-the-line 304 stainless steel on all exterior surfaces, includingElmira_Northstar_Fridge1950FTSS the doors, sides and top, while maintaining the Northstar collection’s signature retro curves and striking chrome accents. The sleek yet vintage exterior presents the best of both worlds in kitchen appliance design, allowing it to fit into various interior styles seamlessly. The stainless steel finish also allows the refrigerator to be paired with other brands’ stainless steel appliances for a consistent aesthetic look.

“Stainless steel shows no signs of going out of style, while neutral and gray color palettes in kitchens are similar, strong styling options. Elmira has brought these two concepts together into one with the Model 1950FTSS refrigerator,” says Tony Dowling, vice president of sales and marketing at Elmira Stove Works.

Elmira_Northstar_Fridge1950_QuicksilverOne of the complaints about stainless steel in general is how it easily displays fingerprints and streaks. This is where our Quicksilver metallic finish saves the day! Quicksilver has a lower luster than Northstar’s traditional high-gloss finish, allowing for an appearance very similar to stainless steel. But, unlike traditional stainless steel linear polishing, Quicksilver is extremely resistant to visible markings.

“You could call it ‘stain-least’ instead of ‘stainless’,” says Dowling, “For busy people who want a stainless steel look in retro-inspired appliances, but want to spend their time in the kitchen preparing and enjoying food rather than wiping down appliances, Quicksilver is a great alternative.” The Quicksilver finish is available through the complete line of Northstar appliances.

40 Years of Cooking Up Vintage Kitchen Appliances!

It’s our 40th anniversary, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate! As Canada’s only remaining kitchen appliance manufacturer, we have no plans to disappear or slow down.

When asked about our 40-year anniversary, founder and CEO Tom Hendrick said, “It’s been quite a run. There have been some bumps in the road but, by looking ahead and continually adapting, we’ve been able to not only survive, but thrive.” This is based on our focus on product quality, innovation, maintaining a steadfast loyalty to our dealer network, and sticking to what we do best.

Picture1Elmira is looking ahead, not back. We have some exciting new products in the works, and we’re continually working on new programs and promotions to assist our dealers in keeping our products front-of-mind with their staff and the consumer.

To celebrate 40 years of success, we will be holding a sweepstakes in the United States and Canada! The “Northstar Fab Forty Fridge” sweepstakes presents the opportunity for one person in each country to win a Northstar Model 1949 11-cubic foot
retro refrigerator
. Perfect for basements or the home hangout, the Model 1949 refrigerator features adjustable glass shelving and space for tall bottle storage. Contestants can enter by mailing in ballots, or online through the Elmira Stove Works website, running March 15 through September 30th.

Elmira Stove Works got its start with local Mennonites coming into Tom Hendrick’s hardware store looking for parts for their wood-burning stoves. Recognizing a niche market, in 1975 Hendrick decided to begin making stoves himself. He made 25 stoves in the first year, then 200 the following year. The popularity of the stoves grew, and consumers soon began to ask for similar styling in gas and electric models. Fireplace shops, appliance stores and emporiums across the continent were an enthusiastic dealer network for our growing merchandise collection. Forty years later, we offer a full spectrum of kitchen appliances in various colors between our 1850s Antique and 1950s Northstar collections.

1949_Red_Open_FoodIt may seem like an unusual business plan – recreate from the past, with an eye to the future – but it’s a plan that has kept us cooking for four decades! At Elmira Stove Works, we are constantly upgrading the styling and performance of our products, while remaining committed to maintaining the authenticity and craftsmanship that sets them apart.

Mark your calendars for March 15 when the “Northstar Fab Forty Fridge” sweepstakes begins…you won’t want to miss out! For more information about Elmira Stove Works, visit www.elmirastoveworks.com.

Modern Day Renovating for a Retro Look

Is there such a thing as being “modernly-retro”?  Of course there is. Especially when there is a company like Elmira Stove Works to help make your kitchen, stove, or even your “man-cave” stylishly retro without losing the modern perks expected today.

The key to “going retro” is all in the style.  Rounded edges with chrome accents are just some of the many features in a typical retro-themed kitchen. Color is also very important. The 50s were known for their bright color schemes contrasted against a clean lined shape to their décor. To make this look yours, don’t confine yourself to the colors of this decade: stainless steel, black and white. Instead add your own modern twist by picking your own color while keeping the 50s style to your kitchen, like Candy Red or Flamingo Pink.  Elmira Stove Works offers nine color options to choose from in their Northstar line, with the ability to customize colors to for any design need; a perfect way to stay true to your own sense of style without taking away from the goal of going retro.

Don’t forget those modern day perks to your new fridge or appliance! The complete package can be found in Elmira’s full set of Northstar appliances, including ranges, refrigerators, dishwasher panels, hoods and microwaves.  Elmira’s dedication to the retro look even goes as far as making sure that appliances have digital readouts that disappear once their job is done! This keeps your new kitchen looking like the iconic 50s style you have always dreamed of.

Elmira suggests checking out RetroRenovation.com for additional retro design ideas and authentic retro décor.  With some good hunting skills you may find a few treasures that your friends will be admiring for years to come. A retro renovation of your kitchen brings in color and joy to the most frequently used room in your home.
